Embark on an excellent day trip to Meteora, where you will explore centuries-old monasteries, and enjoy panoramic views…
Meteora is an essential destination for those travelling in Northern Greece. They are a complex of huge sandstone stones that rise above Kalambaka. On top of some of these stones, imposing monasteries were built. It is the second most important monastic complex in Greece, after Mount Athos.
Unfortunately, today only seven of the original thirty monasteries are functioning. During our tour, we can visit two or three of them, depending on the day of the visit. Since 1988, these monasteries have been included in UNESCO’s list of World Monuments.
Many geologists, both Greek and foreign, have studied this amazing geological phenomenon, but have not given a satisfactory explanation of how it was created. Nevertheless, in the 14th century, it gave Saint Athanasius of Meteor the opportunity to build the first monastery. The name “Meteora” comes from Saint Athanasios the Meteorite of the Great Meteor Monastery.
