A beautiful day trip to the picturesque town of Nafplio and the famous Corinth Canal | up to 8 hours
Nafplio
Nafplio is a relatively small town of just over 10,000 inhabitants, and of great importance in the history of independent Greece – From 1829 to 1834 it was the first capital of independent Greece. It was also here that its first prime minister, Johannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated, and here the powers crowned the first king of Greece, Prince of Bavaria, Otto. The city is characterized by small, artsy streets around the squares and, beautiful port and isolated beaches.
The picturesque area of the town is the port area with restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues.
Sights on the island include the town hall, the old mosque, where the first government met, and several churches. The unique and impressive sites are the fortresses: the small Burji fortress in the port and two fortresses above the city, the largest of which is Palamidi, is a place for a spectacular walk, after visiting the place you can go down the road leading to the parking near the gate, to the city calmly and be impressed by the beauty of the city and the view of the port.
The fortress was built by the Venetians who ruled the city, and in 1715 it passed into the hands of the Turks, who ruled until the Greek revolted. For those who want to go deeper, there is a Cathedral named after St. George, and there is a museum of ethnography and folklore of the area, it seems that just staying in the clean and well-kept city is reason enough to visit the place.
Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal is a canal in Greece that crosses the Strait of Corinth and connects the Saronic Gulf with the Gulf of Corinth. The canal, was made between 1881 and 1893, shortens the distance from the Adriatic Sea to Piraeus by 320 kilometers. The canal is 6.3 km long and 21 meters wide.
Three bridges were built over the canal, one for a railway and two for a main road from central Greece to the Peloponnese. At both ends of the canal, sunken bridges were erected on the bottom of the canal and raised above it for the passage of vehicles. Today, few ships pass through the canal, mainly yachts and tourist ships, since its width is not large enough for modern cargo ships. An average of 11,000 ships pass through the canal annually.
