Syntagma Square and Ermou Street
Syntagma Square is the most central square in Athens and directly symbolises the heart of the city for generations. The square has a significant importance to modern Athens from an historical and social point of view. Majority of social and political events such as demonstrations and cultural gatherings take place in Syntagma. Within walking distance you can visit the most known places such as the Greek Parliament Building, the Acropolis and the Parthenon of Athens, the Acropolis Museum, the Monument to the Unknown Corps, the Plaka district, the Psiri district, the prestigious Kolonaki neighbourhood and the famous Monastraki square.
Ermou street is known as the shopping district of Athens, and it is filled with international and local brands, cafes, restaurants, street stalls and touristic souvenir shops.
The Plaka district
The Plaka district is located on the North-Eastern slope of the hill, and it actually constituted the whole of Athens before it gained the status of the capital city of independent Greece. It is a picturesque area, filled with charming narrow and winding alleys. The Plaka is one of the most popular tourist areas due to its excellent location and the history surrounding it, mostly from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
The Agora
The Agora was the centre of life in ancient Athens – an area of shops and markets, public institutions and squares. The remains of the buildings are scattered today in the open area between Monastiraki and the Acropolis. To get an idea of the area, you should visit the museum, which is located in Attalus’ site: a long two-story building on the left side of the gate to the site that was built by King Attalus II, (2nd century BC). The magnificent shop building has been meticulously restored by the people of the American School of Archaeology; at its far end is the Byzantine church from the 11th century Ai Apostoli (Holy Apostles).
Psiri Neighbourhood
Psiri is the hottest neighbourhood in Athens, filled with boutique hotels, beautiful graffiti and charming places for coffee in the morning and a drink in the evening. Most of the taverns and cafes in Psiri are located around ancient churches, and the small squares are lit with the colors associated with the neighbourhood. The name of the central square in Psiri is Iroon, and two main streets lead out from it and along them are magnificent pubs, cafes, taverns and clubs.
